Behind the First Canvas

Every painting begins before the brush touches canvas. On process, place, and what a commissioned work really asks of the painter.

A commission is not an instruction. It begins with an image — a photograph, a sketch, a memory described in a handful of words — and then a conversation about what that image carries. The Vision Session is free because the listening is the work. Everything on the canvas comes from what happens in that hour.

The five collections — Austin Texas, The Bahamas, Telluride Colorado, Sedona Arizona, Panama — each began the same way. A place that holds something. A quality of light that is only itself in that location, at that time of year. The canvas is an attempt to make that quality permanent.

Twenty-one years of practice is enough to know that the painting teaches you while you are making it. You plan the composition, you understand the palette, you know the destination — and then the work decides something different and you follow it. A commissioned work is the same, with one additional voice in the room: the person who asked for it, and what they need the finished thing to do.
